We will be hiking up Lions Head, Cape Town’s most Instragram’able hike. We plan to either catch the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean or sunrise from the Hottentots Holland mountains. We enjoy some amazing photo opportunities before our descent. During a sunset hike, we descend in the dark using our flashlights (provided). During a sunrise hike, we may hike the first part in the dark using our flashlights (provided). While the hike is regarded as easier than Table Mountain, it still involves steep rocky and narrow terrain at certain points from about half up way and a section where the use of steel handles and chains need to be used to get up 2 pitches of about 3 meters each (only up and not down). Quite adventurous indeed. This hike has been an age old tradition for locals especially during the full moon and on clear/windless nights/mornings where the lights of the city below dazzle and the moon and stars show off its beauty in the night sky.

The trail going up Lion’s head is a screw top trail you’ll be circling the mountain getting to the top. At one point the path gives way to rough ground you have to step up using your hands to scramble over rocks. You will then continue steeply upwards to the first ladder, before traversing along a shelf with a chain handrail. Next, you will reach a fork, where you will have the choices to either veer left to circumnavigate two rock pitches or to turn right and climb the rock pitches. If you are not into vertical rock steps continue left, past some huge pine trees to gain the crest of the southeast ridge. At the summit of Lion’s Head one has a 360 degree view it is one of the three iconic peaks that frame the city of Cape Town. It has Table Mountain as its backdrop and it is situated in the smallest and richest floral kingdoms in the world. Then little by little, the city lights will turn on or off offering a new sight. Steven gave up his career in the captive industry as a big cat handler to take you out to go and witness Lions do what they do best – rule the open Savannah and all that inhabit it. He will keep you entertained with his stories and also has the luck of the Irish when it comes to spotting Lions, and was the only tour operator in Pilanesberg to have 100% success rate in locating lions in 2018. Steven has hosted some of South Africa biggest celebrities on tour due to his reputation as the little lion man – a nick name given to him by South Africas Biggest Rock Band – the Parlotones.
